Animal Protection and Control Division

The Department of Community Development’s Animal Protection and Control Division is responsible for maintaining and operating the Jefferson City Animal Shelter, as well as aiding the public with animal disturbances and nuisances.

How You Can Help the Jefferson City Animal Shelter

 

The Animal Control Officers' duties include:
- rescuing stray animals within the limits of Jefferson City.
- removing wildlife from inside homes and work areas.
- providing assistance for animal calls to the Cole County Sheriff, as requested.
- investigating animal abuse calls.
- reporting bite incidents.
- taking necessary action when citizens do not comply with City animal ordinances.
- collecting dead animals, both road kill and euthanized at local veterinarian offices.
- investigating unclean yard complaints.
- investigating barking complaints.
- corralling loose livestock.
- collecting injured animals.
- assisting police serving warrants.
- investigating abandoned animal reports.
- performing euthanasia when necessary.
- informing the public of city and county ordinances.

The Animal Shelter’s Veterinarian and Veterinarian Assistant’s duties include:
- feeding, medicating, and caring for animals housed at the shelter.
- providing adoption services.
- supervising volunteers.
- maintaining the animal shelter’s appearance
- providing various adoption services included in the adoption fee.

Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program for Jefferson City Residents

If you are receiving state or federal assistance through the Social Services Department or any other state department,

and a resident of the City of Jefferson, you are eligible for the new spay/neuter program. You will need to come fill out an application and once your eligibility is determined, you can pay a fee and get a voucher to get your animal altered.

Female Dog - $50 Male Dog - $40  Female Cat - $40  Male Cat - $30
