New Courthouse Designs Unveiled

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. – U.S. Senator Christopher S. “Kit” Bond joined the U.S. General Services Administration today at the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce to unveil the design concepts of the proposed Jefferson City U.S. courthouse.

Architects of the new courthouse have created a classic curved facade that pulls the building to the corner of Lafayette and East State Street.  The building’s curvature creates a public square and offers building occupants views of the river and the capitol.

"The design of this new courthouse embraces the characteristics of Jefferson City and creates an inviting atmosphere focused on the community," said Brad Scott, GSA Regional Administrator. "Putting this new courthouse on the bluff at the old prison site represents the perfect combination of history and opportunity."

"We at GSA are grateful to have such a wonderful team behind this project. From our Congressional delegation and world-class contractors to our dedicated tenants and outstanding project team, this project will set the standard for future courthouse construction projects," Scott said.

Through GSA’s Design Excellence Program, Kallmann, McKinnel and Wood Architects, Inc. was selected as the lead design firm for the new courthouse. J.E. Dunn Construction has been hired as the construction contractor.

The GSA Design Excellence Program establishes nationwide policies and procedures for selecting the finest and most appropriate architects and artists for GSA commissions.  This program also implements rigorous review processes to produce facilities and civic artworks of outstanding quality and value. Under the auspices of the program, distinguished private-sector design professionals were appointed by the Commissioner of GSA’s Public Buildings Service
to assist KMW and their teams.

When completed, the courthouse will be the new home of the Western District of Missouri’s Central Division, part of the U.S. Court’s Eighth Circuit.  Federal court and related offices in Jefferson City are currently located in the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse Building at 131 West High Street, and at several leased properties in the downtown area.
