In 1948 the Jefferson City Memorial Airport was constructed on 238 acres of land, and consisted of one paved runway 3,700 feet long and two grass strips 3,200 and 2,600 feet long. Today, the facility consists of an Airport Terminal Building, which was constructed in 1966, an Air Traffic Control Tower, which was commissioned in 1973, one main runway that is 6,000 feet long, and one crosswind runway that is 3,400 feet long. Both runways are equipped with parallel taxiways.
The Air Traffic Control Tower is part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Contract Tower Program, and is staffed by four Air Traffic Controllers and an Air Traffic Manager. The Tower is operated by Midwest Air Traffic Services, Inc., which is under contract with the FAA, and handles approximately 50,000 operations annually. The Control Tower operates from 6:00 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. 365 days a year, and 24-hour approach services are provided by Mizzu Approach, which is located at Springfield, Missouri, ATCT. Furthermore, the Airport Surveillance Radar Site is located near New Bloomfield, Missouri, approximately 5.9 NM north of the Jefferson City Memorial Airport.
