Madison Hotel, 200 Madison, Fulton Fire Department provided mutual aid. Fire started in the basement ballroom which was decorated with cedars and bunting, and spread rapidly and upward through the three story wood structure. The register showed 71 guest, the Fire and Police Departments were stretched beyond their limits making rescues and controlling crowds. One man died in the fire and was not found for several days. The search was called off due to heavy rains but the victim was found by Chief Robertson and Police Chief Mackey. This fire showed several weaknesses in both the Police and Fire Departments, in 1940 the JCFD purchased their first Aerial Ladder Truck.
