Information

It is recommended that smoke detectors that are 10 years or older be replaced.  Statistics prove that smoke detectors that are 10 years old need replaced.  Detectors working for 10 years without stopping have been in use for 87,000 hours.  Right now there is 77 million smoke detectors that need to be replaced That is 1/3 of the detectors in use.  An additional 5 million will need to be replaced each year.

Each year 1100 children die from fire.  An additional 11,000 are injured, most are at night, without working smoke detectors or no detector at all.  Research shows that every second counts. You have less than 2 - 3 minutes to get out of a fire.

IF YOU CAN'T REMEMBER WHEN YOUR SMOKE DETECTOR WAS INSTALLED, THEN IT'S TIME TO REPLACE IT.  Some smoke detectors have a sticker inside that has a place to put the date that the detectors was installed. If it doesn't, put a sticker inside it and mark it yourself.

Where do you need detectors?

  • One near or in each sleeping area.
  • One on each level of the home.
