Parks and Recreation SPRING & SUMMER EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

As a condition of employment, all hired applicants are required to attend a preseason staff training session.  The training date and location will be announced at a later date.  At the discretion of the Director, all Parks and Recreation seasonal employees agree to be paid their hourly wage for the number of hours he or she works for each week, regardless of the number of hours worked.

INTERN (1)

Minimum Qualifications: Graduate and/or undergraduate student in an NRPA accredited college or university parks and recreation program assigned by the school to a fieldwork experience for academic credit.

Pay:  $7.50 per hour in addition to academic credit.

Responsibilities:  The general fieldwork experience will introduce the student to all facets of the City of Jefferson Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry.  Our Internship Manual, available upon request, provides complete information.  During summer months, emphasis is placed upon support of the Recreation Division.

Hours: Contact hours will be established by the university's intern supervisor and the Recreation Facilities and Special Services Division Director.  Generally, interns are expected to work shifts comparable to that of the staff member with whom he/she is assigned for that period.

GOLF PROGRAM INSTRUCTORS

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum of 18 years of age preferred; teaching/coaching experience preferred; basic knowledge of fundamental golf skills required; ability to teach those skills to children 8 -15 years of age; first aid and CPR certification desirable.

PROGRAM LEADER (1-2) Pay: $8.00-$9.60 per hour.

Responsibilities: Plan, coordinate and implement instructional golf programs for youth 8 - 15; supervise program staff.

STAFF (5-6) Pay: $7.50-$9.15

Responsibilities: Teach children fundamental golf skills, proper golf etiquette and course management in instructional program settings; help develop enthusiasm and good sportsmanship.

Hours: Program times will vary between 8:00 a.m. -3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and may require some evenings.

GOLF COURSE CLUBHOUSE / CART ATTENDANT

Minimum Qualifications:  Minimum 16 years of age preferred; experience in golf, merchandising, and concession/food preparation preferred; adaptable schedule and strong "people" skills required; ability to lift at least 30 lbs.

Pay:  $7.25-$8.10 per hour.

Responsibilities:  Customer service; clubhouse cleanliness and appearance; enforcement of facility policies; cash register and concession equipment operation; sale of golf supplies; operation of driving range and more.

Hours: Varies from 6:30 a.m. until dark, 7 days a week, weather and course conditions permitting.

ADULT AND YOUTH VOLLEYBALL OFFICIALS (2-6)

Minimum Qualifications: 18 years of age preferred, thorough knowledge of volleyball, volleyball officiating experience preferred. 

Pay: $9.75-$14.00 per match; depending upon certification and level of experience.

Responsibilities: Officiate and record score of adult and youth volleyball matches (indoor and sand); administer games in a professional and responsible manner according to Parks and Recreation guidelines.

Hours: Youth leagues: Monday, Tuesday & Thursday evenings in the Spring; Adult leagues: Monday through Wednesdays evenings in the Spring, Fall, and Winter; Monday through Thursday in the Summer.

LEISURE CLASS INSTRUCTORS

Minimum Qualifications: 18 years of age, 21 years of age preferred; demonstrates skills in a leisure pursuit of interest to others and willingness to share that skill through teaching; teaching experience preferred but not mandatory; Parks and Recreation is particularly interested in recruiting instructors with skills in outdoor recreation/education (climbing/rappelling, backpacking/camping, canoe/kayaking, sailing, mountain biking) for classes and day camp programs utilizing Binder Park.

Pay: $10.00-$15.00 per hour.

Responsibilities: Instruct class in a leisure skill; Parks and Recreation typically provides or arranges the facility, assists in supplying equipment and supplies; dependable, conscientious, enthusiastic instructors needed for year-round leisure education and camp programs.

Hours: Classes are generally at the convenience of the instructor and are scheduled into time slots conducive to the activity and to the attraction of students.  Classes typically last four to six weeks and meet at the same time each week.  However, some classes are single meetings.  There is considerable flexibility depending upon the activity.  Opportunities to work with children in camp settings have time and locations already set. 

FINE ARTS CAMP

Dates: Two weeks, with dates to be determined.

Minimum Qualifications: Two or more years of college background in art, dance, drama, music, or related field; CPR and first aid certification preferred; experience working with children.

 

LEADER (1) - Pay:   $8.50-$9.55 per hour.

Responsibilities:  Plan, coordinate and supervise Fine Arts Camp.

Hours: Approximately 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.

 

STAFF (2-3) - Pay: $8.00-$9.00 per hour.

Responsibilities: Instruct, supervise and implement camp program for children in fine arts.

Hours: Approximately 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.

YOUTH DAY CAMPS

CAMP WOKKA WOKKA (for children grades 1-3) - Memorial Park; activities include arts and crafts, games and physical activities, cookouts, hikes, nature study, field trips and much more.

 

BINDER ADVENTURE CAMP (for children grades 4-6) - Binder Park; some of the activities will include canoeing, fishing, archery, hayrides, outdoor camping/cooking, confidence course, hiking, nature study, and much more.

YOUTH SPORTS DAY CAMP (children grades 1-6) - Ellis Porter Park; activities will include but are not limited to basketball, flag football, soccer, golf, dodge ball, field trips, crafts, and nutrition information.

 

LEADER (1 for each camp) - Pay: $8.50-$9.55 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications:  21 years of age preferred; bachelor's degree in Recreation and Park Administration, Outdoor Recreation, Natural Science, Conservation, Physical Education, or a related field preferred; first aid and CPR certification required; teaching experience preferred; experience supervising young adults required; American Campcrafters Association certification preferred for Camp Wokka Wokka and Binder Adventure Camp.

Responsibilities:  Plan, coordinate, and supervise camp.     

Hours: 7:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.

 

STAFF (2-3 for each camp)

Pay: $7.50-$8.65 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications:  18 years of age preferred; related degree preferred; teaching experience preferred; first aid and CPR certification required; experience working with children preferred.

Responsibilities: Implement, instruct, supervise camp program.

Hours: 7:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Staff will also have the opportunity to work the after camp swim program from 3-5 p.m.

ATHLETIC FIELD SUPERVISOR (2-6)

Facilities: Optimist, Washington Park, Binder, & Oesterly Fields.

Minimum Qualifications:  19 years of age preferred; strong public relation skills; responsible; general knowledge of baseball and/or softball rules preferred; ability to work with little supervision.

Pay: $8.00-$9.60 per hour.

Responsibilities: Supervise baseball and/or softball facilities; serve as on-site representative for Parks and Recreation Department; handle problems with players and fans; supervise program staff; record-keeping.

Hours: Monday through Friday evenings; some weekend tournaments

SLOW-PITCH SOFTBALL UMPIRES

Minimum Qualifications:  18 years of age preferred; ASA certification preferred (certification classes will be available).

Pay:  $12.25-$15.25 per game; depending on certification and experience.

Responsibilities:  Umpire and record score at adult slow pitch softball games using the one-umpire system; administer games in a professional and responsible manner according to Parks and Recreation guidelines.

Hours:  Monday through Thursday evenings; possible make-up games on weekends.

YOUTH BASEBALL/SOFTBALL UMPIRES (15+)

Minimum Qualifications:  17 years of age preferred, MSHSAA, USSSA certification and/or ASA certification preferred for A League, required for AA,  AAA & competitive baseball leagues; previous umpiring experience preferred.

Pay: $14.00 - $28.00 per game; depending upon certification and level of play.

Responsibilities:  Umpire youth baseball games for ages 8-18 and/or softball games for ages 8-18; represent Parks and Recreation in a positive, professional manner; handle game-related problems with players, coaches, fans.

Hours:  Games Monday through Friday, 5:30 - 11:00 p.m. and some weekend tournaments beginning at 9 a.m.  Spring competitive leagues begin the week of April 5.

START SMART STAFF (2-4)

Minimum Qualifications: 18 years of age preferred; teaching/coaching experience preferred; basic knowledge of sport specific fundamentals required; first aid and CPR certification preferred.

Pay:   Leader: $7.50-$9.15 per hour; Staff: $7.25-$8.10 per hour.

Responsibilities:   Help parents teach their children (ages 3-7) the motor skills necessary to achieve success and confidence needed for organized sports; help create a positive first time sports experience.

HoursOne evening a week per sport.

Sports Offered:  Soccer(spring); Baseball(summer); Golf(spring); Football(fall); Basketball(winter)

TEE-BALL / COACH PITCH UMPIRES (2-4)

Minimum Qualifications:  18 years of age preferred; teaching/coaching experience preferred; thorough knowledge of baseball fundamentals required; first aid and CPR preferred; experience working with ages 6-8 preferred.

Pay:  $12 per game.

Responsibilities:  Umpire games; teach baseball/softball fundamental skills to boys and girls ages 5-8; develop enthusiasm and sportsmanship; enlist the assistance of parents and monitor their involvement.

Hours:  Sunday through Friday evenings, 4:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

CONCESSION ATTENDANTS

Minimum Qualifications: 16 years of age; previous cash handling and concession equipment experience preferred; public relations skills; good hygiene.

Pay:  $7.25-$8.10 per hour.

Responsibilities: Preparation and sale of food and beverage products at Parks & Recreation concession facilities at ball fields, pools, and special events; inventory; completion of financial reports; accurately dealing with large sums of money; greeting public and providing a favorable first impression;  clean-up of equipment and facilities.

Hours: 11:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. - 11 p.m., weekends.

Memorial park family aquatic center manager & assistant manager (3-4)
Ellis-porter pool manager and assistant manager (2)

 

Minimum Qualifications:  21 years of age preferred; Jeff Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Certification Training required; WSI preferred; experience in supervision, life guarding, swim instruction, and pool operation required.

Manager Pay: $10.00-$10.60 per hour.

Assistant Manager Pay:  $8.50-$9.10 per hour.

Responsibilities:  Complete day-to-day operation and administration of municipal pool.

Hours:  40 hours per week--pools open 4 ½ - 8 ½ hours per day, seven days per week, including holidays.  Schedule varies but includes at least one weekend day per week.

* Parks and Recreation does not accept any other lifeguard certification, but will train potential candidates, if necessary.

LIFEGUARDS (25+)

Minimum Qualifications:  15 years of age; Jeff Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Certification Training required; WSI preferred; previous experience as a lifeguard preferred; above average swim skills required.

Pay: $7.50-$8.00 per hour.

Responsibilities:  Supervision and safety of pool patrons; rule enforcement; facility cleanliness; required attendance and participation in weekly in-service training and meetings.

Hours:  As many as 40 per week if instruction is included---schedule varies---weekends and holidays required.

* Parks and Recreation does not accept any other lifeguard certification, but will train potential candidates, if necessary.

POOL CUSTOMER SERVICE ATTENDANT (8-12)

Minimum Qualifications:  16 years of age; first aid and CPR certification required; previous money handling experience and electronic cash register operation preferred; public relation skills; good hygiene.

Pay:  $7.25-$7.75 per hour.

Responsibilities:  Collection of pool admission fees; operation of electronic cash register;  clean-up of equipment and facility; completion of financial reports; greeting public and providing a favorable first impression; slide dispatch; rule enforcement.  Also required to teach swimming lessons if needed.

Hours:  Up to 40 hours per week---schedule varies---includes weekend and holidays.

   

SWIM INSTRUCTOR (25+)

Minimum Qualifications:  15 years of age; American Red Cross WSI preferred; first aid and CPR certification required; previous teaching experience preferred.

Pay: $7.65-$8.25 per hour.

Responsibilities:  Organize and teach group swim lessons to ages 6 months through teens using American Red Cross lesson format.

Hours:  Morning and evening lessons scheduled Monday - Friday.  Saturday lessons scheduled Saturday morning.

VOLUNTEER SWIM INSTRUCTOR

Looking for something fun to do this summer?  Why not spend some of your time involved with swim lessons?  We are looking for responsible individuals (at least 12 years of age) to assist with swim instruction. 

Volunteers will be paired with certified instructors when teaching lessons.

VOLUNTEER JUNIOR LIFEGUARD

Minimum Qualifications:  For youth ages 11-14; must complete the Ellis and Associates Junior International Lifeguard class. 

Responsibilities:  Able to volunteer at the Memorial Park Family Aquatic Center or Ellis-Porter Riverside Pool.

ATHLETIC FIELD MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT (5-7)

Minimum Qualifications:  18 years of age preferred, 16 years of age required; valid Missouri Class E or higher driver's license preferred; facility maintenance and repair experience preferred; willingness to work weekends required; baseball/softball experience preferred. 

Pay:  $7.50-$8.95 per hour.

Responsibilities: Preparation of athletic fields - use of mat/nail  drags, string lines, field painters, hand tampers, rakes, distribution of field amendments (50 lb. bags), and operation of utility vehicles; turf maintenance; janitorial duties.

Hours:  Vary between 7:00am- 5:00pm Monday through Friday, great deal of flexibility required; frequent weekend hours beginning as early as 6:00 a.m.  Weekend work required.

PARK MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT (2-4)

Minimum Qualifications:  18 years of age preferred, 16 years of age required; valid Missouri Class E or higher driver's license preferred; building maintenance and repair experience preferred; willingness to work weekends required.

Pay:  $7.50-$8.95 per hour.

Responsibilities: Park facility maintenance and repair, trash collection, cleaning park facilities and grounds, operate power equipment, and minor construction.

Hours: Hours vary between 7:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Weekend work required.

FORESTRY/LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT (6-8)

Minimum Qualifications: 18 years of age preferred, 16 years of age required; valid Missouri Class E or higher driver’s license preferred; landscaping and tree care experience; grounds maintenance; power equipment operation experience preferred. 

Pay: $7.50-$8.95 per hour.

Responsibilities: Operate forestry and mowing equipment, trim mowing, weeding, mulching, and operating power equipment.

Hours: Hours vary between 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Weekend work required.

GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT (4-6)

Minimum Qualifications:  18 years of age preferred, 16 years of age required; golf course maintenance experience; equipment operation and maintenance experience preferred. 

Pay:  $7.50-$8.95 per hour.

Responsibilities: General golf course maintenance; specialized mowing; operating power equipment.

Hours: Hours vary between 6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Weekend work required.

ICE ARENA ASSISTANT MANAGER (3)

Minimum Qualifications:  20 years of age preferred; First Aid and CPR certification required; experience in employee supervision preferred.          

Assistant Manager Pay:  $8.50-$10.15 per hour.

Responsibilities:  Employee supervision and motivation; facility cleanliness and safety; maintaining quality ice conditions; public relations; supervision of participants and enforcement of rules and regulations; attend to all daily tasks necessary for the efficient and effective operation of the Ice Arena as assigned; accurate record keeping; accurately dealing with large sums of money;   reading and recording compressor data; manager or assistant manager will be on duty at all public sessions.

Hours: 20-30 hours per week throughout Ice Arena season.  Hours will be predominantly during weekends and evenings.

SYNCHRONIZED SKATING COACHES

Minimum Qualifications: 18 years of age preferred; First Aid and CPR certification preferred; excellent skating skills; experience in synchronized skating required; previous teaching experience preferred.

Pay: $7.50-$12 per hour.

Responsibilities: Instruction in the Parks and Recreation synchronized skating program; organize, choreograph and teach synchronized skating routines for teams of various age and ability levels.

Hours:  Sunday and some Monday evenings for practices and various weekends for competitions and exhibitions.  Travel required.

CUSTOMER SERVICE ATTENDANTS (15+)

Minimum qualifications:  16 years of age; First Aid and CPR certification preferred; previous money handling experience preferred; experience in the operation of an electronic cash register preferred; concession experience preferred; ability to deal with the public in a cordial, cooperative, friendly manner required; ability to consistently and equitably enforce facility rules and regulations; skating skill is not a requirement for this position, but is preferred.

Pay:  $7.25-$8.10 per hour.

Responsibilities:  Facility cleanliness / custodial duties in and around the facility; collection of Ice Arena admission fees; public relations; concessions preparation, sales, and cleanliness; supervision of participants and enforcement of rules and regulations; care and maintenance of skates and skate shop area; other duties as assigned.

Hours:  Flexible, dependent upon individual needs; most attendants work 15-25 hours per week with a significant portion of the hours on weekends.      

SKATING INSTRUCTORS

Minimum Qualifications:  16 years of age preferred; First Aid and CPR certification preferred; excellent skating skills; experience in ISI skating program strongly preferred; previous teaching experience preferred; familiarity with ISI instructional programs.

Pay:  $7.50-$12 per hour.

Responsibilities:  Instruction in the Parks and Recreation skating lessons utilizing ISI techniques; organize and teach group skating lessons to various age and ability levels.

Hours:  Pre-School lessons are held Monday and Thursday mornings and afternoons.  Youth and pre-school lessons are conducted on Monday evenings and Saturday early afternoon.  There is considerable flexibility in this schedule.  If a qualified applicant is available only at particular times, he/she is still encouraged to apply.

JUNIOR SKATING INSTRUCTORS

Minimum Qualifications:  12 years of age preferred; excellent skating skills; experience in ISI skating program strongly preferred.

Pay:  Volunteer Basis

Responsibilities:  Assist with instruction in the Parks and Recreation skating lessons utilizing ISI techniques; assist and teach group skating lessons to various age and ability levels.

Hours:  Youth and pre-school lessons are conducted on Monday evenings and Saturday early afternoon.  There is considerable flexibility in this schedule.  If a qualified applicant is available only at particular times, he/she is still encouraged to apply.

  

ICE BROOMBALL OFFICIALS (4)

Minimum Qualifications:  18 years of age required; First Aid and CPR certification preferred; thorough understanding of Parks and Recreation Ice Broomball rules and officiating techniques; ice skating skills; dependable, conscientious, consistent, capable of controlling and managing an adult sport.

Pay:  $10.00-$10.25 per game.

Responsibilities:  Referee adult ice broomball; represent Parks and Recreation in a positive, professional, friendly manner; handle game related problems with players or fans.

Hours:  Ice Broomball league hours to be determined.


Notice

Minors 14 and 15 years of age may not be employed during the school year for more than three hours on any school day or for more than eight hours on any non-school day.  They may not work more than six days a week.

Minors may be employed:

            * Between 7a.m. and 7p.m. during the school year;

            * Between 7a.m. and 9p.m. from June 1 through Labor Day;

            * NO more than eight hours in any day;

            * NO more than six days or forty hours in a week.

Work certificates are required for minors 14 and 15 years of age.  Certificates to work are issued by or under the director of the Superintendent of Schools - specifically the district in which the child resides.
