If you are like most Americans, you are concerned about the safety of your home and your community. One particular type of crime that worries most citizens is breaking and
entering, or burglary. Recent statistics show that burglary accounts for 22 per cent of all property crime.

The How to Lock out Crime series prepared by the Jefferson City Police Department Crime Prevention Unit will make you more aware of the crime of burglary and its dynamics and

show you how to minimize the likelihood that this crime will happen to you.

The How to Lock out Crime series promotes a proactive approach to safety and security. By knowing the conditions favorable to burglars and taking steps to eliminate those conditions, you can greatly reduce the chances that your home or apartment will be burglarized.

Being proactive and implementing a well thought out plan can:

  • significantly reduce the opportunity for a crime to be committed; and
  • minimize the consequences of both personal and property damages — if a crime does occur.
Crime Triad

You may have heard the old adage; "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten."  Well, the same holds true in crime prevention.  If you have been a victim of a home burglary, or any other crime for that matter, then you need to assess why you were targeted in the first place, then take corrective action.  If you simply continue to do what you've always done and ignore the issue, then you can safely expect to be victimized again.

In order to change up your strategy and thoroughly assess the issue, access the material below to learn about various proven measures and practices for improving home security.
