Because of dwindling space for parking lots, more and more parking garages are being built. At some point, you will probably be parking in one. Here are some safety tips for using parking garages:
- If you must leave a key with a parking attendant, leave only your vehicle's ignition key. Don't leave anything attached to it with your name and address.
- Don't park next to a van's sliding door.
- Change from heels to low flats or even sneakers when leaving work in case you need to run.
- At night, leave your office or building with others if possible. If you're alone, have someone from building security escort you.
- Include a small flashlight on your key ring since most garages are poorly lit.
- Approach your vehicle with your keys already in your hand.
- Consider utilizing your vehicle alarm system or a portable personal alarm in case you are confronted.
- Look around your vehicle for any suspicious activity. If someone is loitering around your vehicle, walk past until he leaves.
- Do a quick scan of your vehicle's interior including the back seat before unlocking the door.
- Keep your doors locked and your windows closed.
- Be alert and suspicious of anyone approaching your vehicle to hand out leaflets, ask for donations, etc. Always leave the car window up.
- Keep valuables out of sight. So that people won't know where you're storing your valuables, put them away before entering the garage.
- Report any suspicious activity.
- Drive slowly and follow the designated routes into and out of the garage.
