2006-2007 is the Jefferson City Police Department’s 17th year teaching the D.A.R.E program in our elementary schools. D.A.R.E. is taught by uniformed police officers in a classroom setting.
The core D.A.R.E. curriculum is a 17-week program that teaches life skills to the 4th and 5th grade students of Jefferson City. Some of the topics covered in the core program include Consequences, Resisting Peer Pressure, Building Self Esteem, Managing Stress, Solving Disagreements Without Violence and Decision Making Skills. The junior-high D.A.R.E. curriculum is a ten-session program taught at the 7th grade level. It continues to build upon the core program, but is geared to the situations and pressures that older students face.
The Jefferson City Police Department has five certified D.A.R.E. instructors. Officers Lynn Wansing and Keith Porter teach the core program.
Lieutenant Deric Heislen is the D.A.R.E. Program Coordinator. Every Summer a select group of students attend a D.A.R.E. Camp run by the Community Service Section.
