Jefferson City Police Department History Book

Special Services Division

The Special Services Division is perhaps the most unique of the three Divisions within the Jefferson City Police Department due mostly to the unique approach to policing that lies within our vision, values, and mission statements.

VISION STATEMENT

The Special Services Division of the Jefferson City Police Department shall strive to ensure the effectiveness of police service through the empowerment of its personnel to creatively deal with social disorder and quality of life issues within our community.  We shall, at all times, be responsive to the concerns of the public by encouraging and facilitating an equal partnership between citizens and their police.

VALUE STATEMENT

We shall pursue standards of excellence in our duty to community by:

Demonstrating professionalism through the fair and equitable treatment of others

Displaying the courage and resilience necessary to overcome adversity

Maintaining integrity through adherence to high ethical standards in both our professional and personal lives

Composed of one Captain, two Sergeants, and eleven officers, this Division houses both the Community Services Unit and the Community Action Team, or C.A.T.

The Community Services Unit is made up of one Sergeant who oversees both the D.A.R.E. and School Resource Officers.  Special events, such as KIDS Fest, D.A.R.E. camp, and other community events are coordinated through this Unit, along with appearances from McGruff, the Crime Dog.

The Community Action Team (C.A.T.) is made up of one Sergeant who oversees four officers.  The C.A.T. team is designed to deal with community quality of life problems on a more informal level, and the officers assigned are not driven by police radio calls.  In essence, they may devote time to a particular challenge anywhere in the community and remain committed to solving that challenge without any strains upon the officers who are tasked to patrol the zones of the city.

The Special Services Division Captain is in charge of media relations, and serves as the Public Information Officer for the Department.  In addition, he has responsibilities for Grants Management, Strategic Planning, and acts as a liaison with various community groups.
